How to open a CSV file if you don’t have MS Excel installed?

When I joined my new company, I was given a Mac and was asked to do all my works with that. That Mac didn’t have MS office and it was not allowed to install as well. So I was finding it very difficult since I had to deal with MS excel and CSV files.

Ultimately I found the solution of my problem, I am sure its a common problem for many people and therefore I would like to share it.

How to open a CSV file if you don’t have MS Excel installed?

It involves two easy steps:

  1. Upload on Google drive
  2. Once uploaded, open it with Google spreadsheet

Upload on Google drive

– Go to drive.google.com and click on New, then select upload files option and choose your CSV file to upload.

– Open it with Google spreadsheet

– Once the upload is complete, just click on the file and it will open in a Google spreadsheet and Yay… you are all set to go.

Important: Just remember one thing, once you have uploaded the file, try to rename it, else later you might not be able to find it. So either rename it to something which you can remember, or add the link to any other spreadsheet, or add it to any folder which you remember.

Malware Alert: Remove This Android Card Game ‘Durak’ From Your Phone Right Now

If you’ve downloaded the card game ‘Durak’ from the Google Play store, you need to delete it ASAP. Durak is one of the three malicious Android apps that had been lying in the Google Play store in front of a BIG audience. The app was first identified by an Android user who had posted about the adware in the internet security firm Avast’s user forum. Upon looking into the post, one of the folks from Avast dissected Durak and found the malware, thus informing Google which immediately removed the game from its store. After the first install, the card game behaves normally and resembles a working game app. But once you reboot your Android device, it comes into effect with a series of pop-up ads thrown on to your device’s screen, trying to lead you to third-party app stores. Flip Chytry from Avast says,

Each time you unlock your device an ad is presented to you, warning you about a problem, e.g. that your device is infected, out of date or full of porn. This, of course, is a complete lie. You are then asked to take action, however, if you approve you get re-directed to harmful threats on fake pages, like dubious app stores and apps that attempt to send premium SMS behind your back or to apps that simply collect too much of your data for comfort while offering you no additional value.

A rule of thumb – when you notice anything weird happening on your phone, remove any new application that you’ve downloaded from the app store. Thus, if you’re one among the 5 million Android users who’d downloaded Durak, please take immediate actions if you haven’t already. Malicious apps aren’t a new thing to come by but it’s something to look into if the app has found its way into Google apps store. Because it then has the potential to harm the global Android market, thus giving a big hit to Google. So please, if you had accidentally installed the game on your Android device and have been noticing something weird going on with your phone, then take immediate actions. Go to your phone Settings –> navigate to Apps –> Tap on to Durak

and click on Uninstall. If you encounter anything like above in the future, please don’t panic. At RedSome, we provide you with insanely simple solutions to all your tech related problems. If there’s something you’ve been trying to find a solution for, please feel free to knock on our door. Pssst… Can you find the Knock Knock!! button on the screen?

1] Use Ctrl + Shift +  window switcher, and it brings in a ‘+’ cursor on to the screen.

WhatsApp Web: How To Access WhatsApp On Your PC/Laptop?

On January 21, 2015, WhatsApp announced on their blog regarding their new feature called WhatsApp Web, where a user could use WhatsApp on a web browser. Yes, you can now  send messages across to your contacts through the convenience of your PC/laptop. It’s essentially a web app rather than a native client, yet it’s really neat for those who don’t like to pick up their phone every other moment to reply to their pings.

This tutorial will walk you through on how to access WhatsApp on your PC/Laptop device.

Psst… Before you give this a shot, please make sure that WhatsApp is currently updated to the latest version on your phone. Or you’d end up scratching your head on how to scan the QR code to access the web version of the app. Also you DO NOT need an external QR code scanner app.

1] Visit web.whatsapp.com on your PC/laptop device using Google Chrome web browser. The WhatsApp web feature currently does not support other web browsers but they do intend to roll out on other browsers which is what it says while trying to access this in Mozilla Firefox. Upon visiting the website, you’ll see a QR code, just like the pic below.

WhatsApp web version interface

2] The next step would be to go to your mobile app and navigate to the WhatsApp Web option.

Navigate to WhatsApp Web option on Phone to scan the QR code.

3] Scan the QR code on the browser screen with the scanner on your phone. This is necessary, because WhatsApp uses your phone number and SMS verifications rather than usernames/passwords.

Scanning QR code on WhatsApp Web using phone app

4] You should see your list of contacts on the screen as the web client gets activated after the QR scan. It takes an average of 2-5 sec for the QR scanner to scan the code. And you’re all set to ping your friends and let them know that you’re sending them messages using your PC/laptop.

WhatsApp Web Interface

Note: This feature currently works on Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. Unfortunately for now, this feature isn’t available to iOS users due to Apple platform limitations.

Thanks to all of you, half a billion people around the world are now regular, active WhatsApp users. In the last few months, we’ve grown fastest in countries like Brazil, India, Mexico, and Russia, and our users are also sharing more than 700 million photos and 100 million videos every single day. We could go on, but for now, it’s more important that we get back to work – because here at WhatsApp, we’re just getting started.

Viber, which is another instant messaging app for smartphones like WhatsApp, already has a desktop version for its big user base.

Could this be the next step of expanding WhatsApp to an even bigger scale by tapping on to its half a billion user base all around the world?

Well let’s keep that decision to the folks at Mountain View, CA.

5 Unmistakable Ways To Overcome The Work Load Feeling Of Overwhelm

5 Steps To Overcome The Work Load Overwhelm

Imagine yourself at your workplace. You’re working on this project in which you’ve been struggling to come up with the solution as desired by your client. This has delayed your shipping date.

You feel as if you’re stuck in a rut. You’re mind gets cluttered by clouds of hopelessness. And then you are assigned more deliverables to ship.

“I’m overwhelmed by all this work and information.”

If this is the kind of self-talk you do with yourself, then please read along the 5 unmistakable ways to overcome the work load overwhelm.

1. See how far you’ve come – Often we worry too much about the future than living in the present moment. Take a break to analyze your past actions and the results derived out of it. Do a meta analysis of where you’re at right now, and then plan your next steps. Along the way, do remember to pat yourself in the back as you find yourself accomplishing small feats.

2. Acknowledge your procrastination – Take a moment to calculate how your time adds up throughout the week. There are 168 of it and we all get the same number of hours. If you haven’t been able to get any good progress on the project that you’ve been working on, it’s likely that you have been expending your time in doing other things which are not even remotely related to what you want to accomplish from your work. If you’re confused, try this 2-minute rule to beat procrastination.

3. Ask the ‘Why’ – If you’re on board in a project and have everything planned out, but you still find yourself stuck without any effect, it could be that you don’t like the cause of the project. And thus the effect is not as desired by you. If you haven’t been able to motivate yourself to get to work and start shipping then ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” The human brain is motivated to take actions towards a particular task if it has a strong why.

4. Exercise and Healthy Diet – What do you feed your body? What’s your physical activity level? These are basic questions you should ask and do a brief analysis. Health should be the number one priority if you want to do remarkable stuff in this world. And when it comes to health, one need not radically make a change in his/her diet. An apple a day and a few pushups/burpees/jumping jacks is often a good start to the day.

5. Keep Moving Forward – The past is gone and you can do nothing more about it but learn from it. The future is yet to come and it can be bright if you’re willing to put up with the wee days and keep moving forward. Stay focused and keep taking actions. Because you already know why you are doing this. You’ve acknowledged your habit of procrastination. Now that you’re true to yourself, do some meditation and then get back to shipping.

Give a shot at the above 5 steps and if it works for you, please feel free to share it with your friends.

Have an unbelievable today.
